A Note From Our Founders, Ross & Coralie Carlyon

Ross

Welcome to Strength Potential. We can’t wait for the opportunity to walk beside your young person as they navigate the next few years of their life!

I’ve been involved with schooling now for over 40 years. During that time I have been passionate about helping senior secondary students and staff thrive and achieve excellence in what they do. I have such a passion for helping young people. Working in our areas of strength boosts our mood and resilience, increases our sense of well-being and makes us more open to new learning. Exactly what we all want!

Coralie

No one tapped into, or even thought about my strengths during my years of schooling…. In my 40’s I returned to learning and training in my areas of strength. This understanding has been liberating. I am able to accept and appreciate who I am and I can appreciate other people for their unique strengths. My sincere wish is for others, especially senior students in these critical years of their lives, to gain this awareness also. Welcome Aboard!

Change your young person’s world through One On One Strengths-Based Mentoring. A trained mentor will build trust and rapport with your young person to help identify strengths and values, set goals, and support them to achieve these goals. This process helps each young person move towards discovering their purpose in life, developing confidence and dealing with the challenges they might face. Each mentoring session is focussed on the young person’s needs and involves a wide range of activities that will help address those needs.

Strength Potential Short Term Respite Accommodation is a service available to NDIS participants as part of their NDIS plans. The duration of the stay is flexible, ranging from 2 to 14 nights. It may occur at any of the numerous accommodation sites located on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and beyond. The choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. During the stay a Strength Potential Mentor/Support Worker will provide 24 hour 1 on 1 care and support for your child or young adult. Prior to the commencement of the stay the STA Coordinator or your young persons allocated mentor/support worker will discuss with you what you hope to achieve as a result of the stay.

What Parents Say About Our Company

Answers To All Your Questions

Strength Potential is a Queensland charity focused on enabling young people experiencing challenges to discover their strengths, reach their potential and make a difference.

Strength Potential offers a range of services accessible through the NDIS and Sponsorships, while also being available to the wider community. These services include One on One Mentoring, Short Term Accommodation, Counselling, Group Programs, and Free Mental Health Resources.

Strength Potential was founded in 2016 as a charity to work in schools, helping students and staff to discover their strengths and reach their potential. We did this through a range of workshops for staff and the kit that we developed to help students as they navigated their senior years.

At the end of 2019, Strength Potential started a youth mentoring arm which has grown rapidly and continues to do so. This has also taken us in a new direction.

Strength Potential is now focused on helping young people who are facing challenges in their lives, so they can utilise their unique strengths and reach their potential.

To support our one-on-one mentoring program, Strength Potential now offers short-term respite accommodation, holiday activity programs and specialist counselling services.

Recognising the increasing mental health problems faced by young people, Strength Potential has developed an interactive online mental health platform called MiiND. This platform is designed to provide information and advice on key mental well-being topics. We also run Mental Health First Aid workshops for adults to help them address these and other issues facing the young people in their care.

So…..the journey continues!

Strength Potential extends its services to South East Queensland, covering specific areas such as the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Redlands City, Northern Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, and Toowoomba.

Strength Potential primarily works with neurodiverse participants between the ages of 10 and 25. Strength Potential will also work with other types of disabilities as long as we are able to fulfil the service requirements of the participant.

We primarily seek mentors with one or a combination of the following qualifications: Individual Support, Counselling, Youth Work, Psychology, Social Work, etc. Additionally, candidates with lived experience in overcoming various challenges and those with relevant prior experience working with young people in diverse contexts are highly valued in our recruitment process.

Strength Potential seeks to collaborate with industry professionals to empower young individuals to reach their potential through their strengths. To refer a young person to Strength Potential, kindly contact us via phone or email, and we will promptly provide you with a referral form.

The Wrong Assumptions

  • All behaviours can be learned
  • If you try hard enough you can do it
  • If you dream it, you can achieve it
  • People who excel all got there in exactly the same way

Fixing weakness leads to success

The Right Assumptions

  • Some behaviours can be learned but many are nearly impossible to learn
  • People who excel deliver the same outcomes, but use different   behaviours
  • Weakness fixing prevents failure
  • Strengths development leads to excellence.
